Georgia firefighter dies while working first shift

A firefighter in St. Mary's, Georgia passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 17th while on duty after working his very first shift as a firefighter.

The St. Mary's Fire Department announced on social media Monday that newly hired firefighter Efren Medina, 20, passed away.

Medina had just returned with his crew to the firehouse after responding to a call and had gone back to sleep. His fellow firefighters woke up later that morning and found him unresponsive.

"He was known for his long time passion for firefighting and his love of the fire service. SMFD will share details regarding arrangements as soon as those are made available to us. We greatly appreciate the outpouring of sympathy, support and condolences during this very difficult time."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral arrangements and other unexpected costs. So far $10,490 had been raised from their $4,000 goal.

Funeral arrangements for Medina were also shared on the department's page.

The cause of his death has not been released and is still under investigation.
