Today is former president Jimmy Carter's 96th birthday

Happy Birthday to former President Jimmy Carter! October 1st marks 96 years for President Jimmy Carter, making him the longest living person to hold the title of President of the United States.

Over the years, Carter has had health scares including a brain tumor and a series of falls. He was back building homes for Habitat for Humanity and working with the Carter Center by the time he bounced back. He's also received accolades including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and numerous Grammy awards.

Last year, after being asked if he would ever run for the presidency again, Carter jokingly remarked on the ages of Presidential candidates: “I hope there’s an age limit,” he said. “If I were just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I don’t believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president.”

Carter plans to celebrate his 96th birthday with his wife of 74 years, Rosalynn, at their home in Plains, Georgia. Fans can send birthday greetings to Carter through the Carter Center’s website.
