This Is How You Should Be Cleaning Your Ears Correctly

We need to be careful when it comes to trying to remove earwax and we've all heard that cleaning your ears using a Q-Tip is not the best way to do so. Check out what the experts had to say below on what you need to know when cleaning out your ears.

“Most people do not need to remove their ear wax,” said Dr. Erich P. Voigt, an associate professor in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. “It is a protective coating of the ear canal. It is a waterproofing agent and has anti-microbial properties. It helps prevent outer ear infections.”

Earwax also helps lubricate the ears and prevents the area from feeling dry and itchy. And just like some other body parts, ears are "self-cleaning" so you shouldn't worry about cleaning the inside area. However, some people can produce to much wax or have abnormal wax consistency so they are more likely to get wax infections and might need medical attention to remove their earwax. Experts also advise to not use Q-Tips because they can scratch the ear canal and cause bleeding or it can even damage the ear.

If you do want to clean your ears, they suggest that you only clean the outside area and any wax that's on its way out the ear. You can also use products like Debrox drops or even hydrogen peroxide to help dissolve the earwax. Head over to the HuffPost for more.
