Tate McRae Shares Her 'Number One' Rule For Maintaining Creativity

Tate McRae is sharing a poignant piece of advice for maintaining one's creativity, and it's so important that she calls it her "number one" rule.

The "Greedy" singer recently told People that her "rule number one" is to "never search yourself up on the internet" as it allows you to get caught up in and worry more about what people think of you rather than focusing on your own truth and what you want to do. She explained her thought process even further.

"All it does is literally just stunt your creativity. I think the worst place to write or create music from is a place of fear and judgement," she said. "It's human nature to go out and look for bad things, and see what you need to work on, and see what people don't like about you. And I think honestly, I've just been like, 'I need to get off my phone.'"

McRae, who is preparing to release her new album So Close To What later this month ahead of her Miss Possessive Tour, said she tries to ignore criticism and "other people's opinions" when she goes into the studio in order to create a product she is passionate about."

"I think whenever I'm confident and ready to try anything and not scared, that's when I create my best stuff," she said. "I think freedom is the key to your best work and your best mind, so I try to block out the noise as much as I can."

So Close To What drops February 21.
