12 decomposing bodies found at Coffee County funeral home identified

COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – Twelve of the 18 bodies found in various stages of decomposition at Johnson Funeral Home in October have been identified.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Coffee County Coroner's Office have notified the families of those identified and given them the necessary information to finalize arrangements for their loved ones.

"Out of respect for their privacy, the GBI will not be releasing their identities at this time," the agency said.

The remains were discovered as deputies from the Coffee County Sheriff's Office served an eviction notice at the business.

The funeral home owner, 39-year-old Chris Johnson, was later charged with 17 counts of abuse of dead body. Additional charges are expected in the case, the GBI said.

The agency is still working to identify the six other bodies that were discovered.

The GBI recently released a list of frequently asked questions surrounding the case. For more information, visit here.
