Beaufort Co. officials remind residents to be aware of current ongoing scam

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) -The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) is reminding the community to stay aware as various scams of individuals impersonating law enforcement officers have re-emerged in Beaufort County.

BCSO has received several calls and reports of individuals impersonating officers who are demanding payments for missed jury duty or for other legal obligations.

The sheriff's office wants to remind everyone that neither they nor other law enforcement agencies accept payment for fines and penalties related to criminal matters over the phone.

No legitimate business or law enforcement agency will ask for payment in the form of Cryptocurrency, bitcoin, gift cards or wire transfers. They will also never ask or direct you to keep these payments secret from your financial institutions or family.

Do not feel pressured or rushed to give money or access to your financial accounts. If you receive a call from a scammer, simply hang up. If you feel you have been a victim of a scam, call BCSO's Non-Emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777.
