CCPD says reports of guns stolen from vehicles doubled in 2024

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) has released visuals showing a sharp rise in gun thefts from vehicles in the year 2024.

Previously shared in a story from Jan. 29 on auto entries, the graph was again shared on the CCPD Facebook page.

"Guns stolen from unlocked vehicles is a growing problem in our jurisdiction of unincorporated Chatham County," the department wrote.

CCPD also provided the following tips for responsible gun owners:

"Your best defense? Be a responsible gun owner, and never leave your firearm in an unlocked vehicle. If it must stay in the vehicle, place it in a locked gun safe, which is hidden out-of-site, and lock your vehicle before you leave it."
