Chatham County Animal Services getting creative to get pets adopted

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Every month, up to 100 animals come through the doors of Chatham County Animal Services. With Georgia being one of the top states for euthanizing companion animals, volunteers and community members are stepping up to make a difference.

One of those volunteers is Becky Flaxer, who has been dedicating her time and expertise to helping homeless animals in our area.

“It’s a good feeling that I’m able to, you know, do something for these animals because they’re great,” she said.

Flaxer has been photographing pets and people for over 10 years, but recently, she’s used her talent to spotlight the unique personalities of animals at Chatham County Animal Services.

Her goal? To give these animals their best shot at finding forever homes.

“That’s what people look for,” Flaxer said, laughing. “They look for the cute pictures. I don’t charge. I give you digital pictures, and it really helps the animals find a home which is the goal of all of this.”

In Georgia, overcrowded shelters often mean tough decisions, including euthanasia. But thanks to volunteers at Chatham County Animal Services and the community, the shelter has increased its live release rate from 50% to 71%—meaning 71% of their animals now leave with either a forever or foster home.

“People sometimes wonder, ‘Does Animal Services have adoptable animals?’” said one staff member. “Yes! We have a lot of adoptable animals here, from little Jack Russell terriers to pit bulls and everything in between. It’s worth coming here first.”

And it’s not just about adoption. Volunteers with all kinds of skills are welcome and needed.
