City of Ludowici issues 10-day boil water advisory

LUDOWICI, Ga. (WSAV) – The city of Ludowici issued a 10-day boil advisory on Wednesday due to an ongoing water line replacement project.

Now through Friday, Dec. 13, at 5 p.m., all customers should boil any tap water that will be consumed, the Coastal Health District advised.

Officials said the project's contractor will need to turn off the water for a few hours every day for several days which may cause the water pressure in the system to drop.

Microbial contamination may occur in water lines with low pressure, health officials said, which could pose health hazards.

The Coastal Health District said to follow these steps to properly boil tap water for use:

  1. Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container;
  2. Continue heating the water for one minute once it begins to boil;
  3. Remove the water from the heat source and allow it to cool before use.

During an advisory, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that boiled tap water or bottled water be used for the following:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing food and preparing food and baby formula
  • Making ice
  • Drinking water for pets

Other activities such as clothes washing, dishwashing, and other uses can be done without boiling tap water if done properly. The complete CDC guidance can be found at this link.
