Countdown to St. Patrick's Day has begun as businesses prepare

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — This week officially marks less than one month until Savannah's biggest day of the year. St. Patrick's Day is quickly approaching, and local businesses are already working around the clock to prepare for the crowds.

Savannah is dubbed the St. Patrick's Day capital of the South. The event is very appealing, with one of the nation's largest parades and beautiful views. This holiday certainly brings a positive boost to city revenues, and businesses are preparing.

This year marks the 201st anniversary of Savannah's St. Patrick's Day parade. The parade has deep roots dating back to 1824 making it one of the oldest and most beloved parades in the United States. Thousands are expected to line the parade route to see 280 units.

Businesses across the city are already preparing for the increase of tourists, offering shuttle services and special deals to accommodate the rush. Since the holiday falls on a Monday, this year can make up to a 4-day weekend of celebration for businesses.

"We just buy a whole lot of beer, whole lot of booze, and we open the doors. We also get extra staff, and we roll with it," said Matt Garappolo, an owner of Pinkie Masters Bar. "It's probably the biggest weekend of the year for sure, without a doubt."

If you want to get involved the festivities really kick off with the greening of the fountain at Forsyth Park on March 7th. Here the iconic Savannah staple turns a brilliant green to celebrate Irish heritage.

The parade is a big boost to the local economy and tourism growth. It brings in millions, a recent study by the City of Savannah showed the holiday brought in an estimated 5.8 million in average monthly revenue across key impacted sectors.
