Court date set for man accused of shooting Statesboro Police officer

STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — A date has been set for a man accused of shooting a Statesboro Police officer in April 2024.

Anthony Kent, of Vidalia, will face five charges, one count of aggravated assault against law enforcement, two counts of entering auto, one count of theft by receiving and one count of willful obstruction of law enforcement.

Kent pleaded not guilty in June 2024. A jury trial is scheduled to begin on March 4, an official confirmed.

Officer Joey Deloach was the first on the scene to a call about a suspicious person breaking into cars at Copper Beech Apartments, a Statesboro Police Department (SPD) spokesperson said.

Deloach said that when found Kent, he was halfway inside someone’s car. Kent then turned and fired at him which damaged a major artery in his leg, Deloach told WSAV.

He was able to fire back, hitting Kent and officers arrested him a short distance away.

Deloach spent six hours in surgery and nine days in the hospital after the shooting.
