SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - A teacher and assistant football coach has resigned and an investigation is underway at DeRenne Middle School following an incident with a student.
According to the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS), the isolated incident happened last Friday.
WSAV is still working to confirm what exactly took place. The school system said the teacher was relocated immediately after it happened, and statements were collected from those in the room.
SCCPSS said that the teacher resigned over the weekend and the investigation is ongoing.

The teacher's name is BeTreylin Elder, WSAV confirmed via a phone call with him. Elder told News 3 he wouldn't have a statement for the media until he spoke with his attorney.
A statement from the school system reads, in part, "Please be assured that we take matters like this extremely seriously. The safety and well-being of our student population are of the utmost importance to us, and we are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all."
