Ex-NFL linebacker arrested in Savannah, charged in Jan. 6 riot

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A former Detroit Lions linebacker was arrested and charged in Savannah for allegedly assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said on Thursday.

Leander Antwione Williams, 31, of Savannah, is charged with a felony offense of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers and obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder, the DOJ said.

Officials also said that Williams is charged with additional misdemeanor offenses of "entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings."

The FBI arrested Williams in Savannah on Thursday. The DOJ said that he will make his initial appearance in the Southern District of Georgia.

The DOJ said that the court documents allege that Williams was among an initial group of rioters to breach the restricted permitter of Capitol grounds. Williams allegedly confronted and overpowered Capitol Police officers.

This case is being investigated by the FBI’s Atlanta and Washington Field Offices, the DOJ said.
