BTFD stated that the blaze was initially reported at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 23, as a fire on the back porch of the residence. Fire crews from stations 30, 31, 33 and 35 found heavy fire on the back side covering both floors of the two-story structure.

The front side showed no active flames, but heavy smoke was visible, while the right side had visible flames through windows.

Frequent wind gusts fueled the flames and made fighting the fire particularly challenging for the crews. Crews from three engine companies, a quint, ladder truck and heavy rescue all worked to contain the fire with additional aid from Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Bluffton Police Department (BPD).

Battalion Chiefs from BTFD stations 35 and 38 provided oversight during the operation.

“Our team responded quickly and worked tirelessly in challenging conditions to prevent further damage to neighboring homes," said BTFD Chief Paul Boulware. "Although the loss of this historic structure is devastating, we are thankful that everyone was able to evacuate safely.”

The owner of the home was out of town at the time of the fire, and the family members who were staying at the residence evacuated safely. No injuries were reported during this procedure.

Several homes close to the residence were also evacuated as a precaution due to concerns over two large propane tanks on the property. The evacuation was completed safely and firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to extinguish hot spots and ensure no additional threats to nearby homes.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time while the Fire Marshal’s Office investigates the incident.

The family is currently staying with nearby relatives and friends.

The house was part of the original Bluffton Township footprint. BTFD deemed it a significant structure within the area, which includes other historic homes.
