Fort Stewart holds 2024 Christmas tree lighting

FORT STEWART, Ga. (WSAV) – The 3rd Infantry Division transformed Fort Stewart into a winter wonderland Tuesday for its annual Christmas tree lighting.

There were dozens of activities for children to enjoy, from a marshmallow roast to bouncy houses.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus, of course, arrived on a fire truck to the delight of the youngsters.

Army officials said it's important to get the community together during the holidays, especially for those who may not be with their loved ones.

"For a lot of these soldiers and their families, they're far away from family. They're not gonna be able to go home," said 3rd ID Division Chaplain Dan Urquhart, "and for some of these soldiers, this is the first time they've been away during the holidays. So it's an opportunity for them to come out, have a good time and also miss home, but at the same time, feel real welcome."

Hunter Army Airfield's Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will take place Thursday evening.
