Georgia Southern AD announces he is departing for Auburn

STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — Athletic Director Jared Benko will be leaving Georgia Southern University for a job at Auburn University, according to a statement released Wednesday by the school's Senior Associate AD of Communications.

Benko joined Georgia Southern in the spring of 2020 after four years at Mississippi State University where he served as Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief Financial Officer.

"Jared's visionary leadership has been transformational for Georgia Southern Athletics. From his fundraising success to his commitment to competitive and academic excellence, his impact will benefit our student-athletes, coaches and fans for decades. We're grateful for the strong foundation he has built here and wish him continued success at Auburn," said Georgia Southern University President Dr. Kyle Marrero.

When asked about his time at Georgia Southern, Benko said: "The past four and a half years at Georgia Southern University have been an incredible blessing for my family and me. What makes this institution truly special are its people and the alignment of shared values. I'm grateful to Dr. Marrero for his mentorship and friendship—his leadership will undoubtedly guide Georgia Southern toward even greater achievements."

The AD continued, saying, "I also want to express my sincere gratitude to Eagle Nation for their unwavering support and belief in us throughout our time in Statesboro. None of this would have been possible without you. Georgia Southern's best days are ahead!"

Benko previously worked as the Assistant Athletic Director for Finance at Auburn for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He will be returning to the university as Executive Deputy Director of Athletics.

Later Wednesday, Georgia Southern President Kyle Marrero announced Chris Davis will be taking over as AD. He currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Athletics at the University.

Davis will officially start on Benko's last day at the school, Nov. 15.
