Georgia’s oyster industry gets a boost as Glynn County proposes mariculture

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — A new opportunity for Georgia’s oyster industry is underway.

Glynn County will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposed mariculture zone. The proposal is aimed at boosting sustainable oyster farming

More oysters could soon be making waves in the Coastal Empire, with a new mariculture zone in the works for Glynn County, but before that happens the Georgia DNR is asking for your feedback.

Imagine a thriving oyster farm right in the heart of Glynn County the Georgia DNR says that soon could become a reality. They will be holding a meeting today to discuss a proposed oyster mariculture zone on Jointer Creek.

The Coastal Resources Division (CRD) will present details about the 31-acre zone, which will include individual leases. Each individual lease is 7.5 acres in size, and the CRD plans to space the leases 100 feet apart, which leaves a central 100-foot-wide channel to ensure easy navigational routes for boats. The zone is a part of Georgia’s ongoing efforts to support sustainable oyster farming, which benefits both the environment and local economies.

The meeting will be at 5 p.m. at the Coastal Resources Division’s Susan Shipman Environmental Learning Center in Brunswick. For those unable to attend a public comment period will open from November 14th to November 29th. Written feedback can be submitted by mail or online.

The project is a step towards growing Georgia’s oyster industry while balancing environmental conservation. The future of Georgia’s oyster industry could be shaped by your input, for more details click here.
