SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - Multiple counties in Coastal Georgia and South Carolina will experience a freeze warning on Saturday.
Here are some helpful tips to prepare and keep safe some vital elements of your home.
Prevent frozen pipes
Home piping can freeze when the temperatures suddenly drop. The best way to prevent this is by use of faucet covers and insular wrapping. You may also leave a small trickle of water running overnight, preferably from an outdoor faucet. Disconnecting outdoor hoses is also essential.
It is also recommended to keep kitchen and bathroom cabinets open so that warm air may circulate below the sink.
Maintaining consistent temperature
Keep the thermostat set at the same temperature, morning through night. Do not use an oven as a source of heat.
If you use a fireplace, beware that sparks and cinders are a danger to the inside of your home. Use a screen to protect yourself from the blaze. Never leave a fire unattended.
Also, if you are using a space heater in your home, keep at least 3 feet of clearance around them. Like a fireplace, never leave them unattended or use them while sleeping.
Keep your plants alive
Smaller potted plants should be brought inside due to frost. Large outdoor plants should be covered with blankets or mulch.
Keep your pets safe
It is best to bring your pets inside if you can. For large dogs that live outdoors, extra blanketing to help trap body heat is encouraged.
The Atlanta-Journal Constitution highlights that conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and hormonal imbalances can compromise a pet’s ability to regulate body heat.
