SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - Energy bills may inevitably go up during the colder months, but there are some tips and tricks to save a few bucks.
In a typical home during the winter, heating accounts for as much as 50 percent of energy usage, according to Georgia Power. HVAC experts, like Don Jones with Canady's Heating and Air, say preventative measures should be taken now.
He says monthly and yearly maintenance is the best place to start.
"It could extend the lifespan of your unit five to 10 years if maintained correctly. It also does allow your system to operate more efficiently if it's cleaned properly," Jones said.
While on the topic of cleaning, make sure you're checking your vents and cleaning them monthly.
"Make sure that your system can breathe. Once too much debris gets in, the filter restricts airflow from the unit, so it causes the compressor to overheat," Jones said.
It's a safety precaution as well to clean vents and ensure no furniture or curtains are blocking airflow.

Jones says smart thermostats are helpful and can adjust the temperature while you're away from home.
Regardless of your system, most power companies recommend you keep your home at 68 degrees in the winter.
Certainly, there are ways to naturally heat a home. You can open your blinds during the day and let the light in. A fireplace is a perfect option - just make sure the flames are completely out before leaving or heading to bed.
Replacing weather stripping can also save you up to 10 percent on energy use, according to Georgia Power.
Lastly, Jones advises to never turn off your HVAC system.
"During the cold months, if the temperature drops to 50 degrees and you turn it on and want it to heat to 80 degrees, it'll take two hours or more to allow your system to heat the house, which will cause your energy bill to go up for running long periods of time," Jones said.
Lastly, never use an oven to warm your home, and always keep 3 feet of clearance around a space heater or fire.
