Lace up your running shoes! Tybee Run Fest to help local community

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — Lace up your running shoes for a good cause! The annual YMCA Critz Tybee Run Fest kicks off today and tomorrow, with hundreds of runners hitting the pavement, marking a fun way to get moving and give back, with proceeds benefiting our local community.

If you’ve never run a race in January or early February… now’s your chance! It may give you a chill thinking about it but it’s all for a good cause.

Races start this evening, and events will continue tomorrow with hundreds of runners gearing up to compete.

Organizers hope to reach a total of 1,200 participants this year. The event includes 5 races, and if you were to compete in all of them in total the length would add up to be a full marathon.

You can register for any of the races, starting this evening with a 5k, followed by a 10k tomorrow morning, then a half marathon, a 2-point 8-mile beach run, and finishing with a one-mile run in the afternoon.

This marks the third year the YMCA of Coastal Georgia is hosting the event with proceeds benefiting their youth-centered programming.

"This is one of those things that we are able to come out here and do. It's the low season so we bring a lot of business to the island. So, these businesses, that are our partners, in the Tybee community are able to thrive during those slow times," said Shannon Horst, the YMCA Critz Tybee Run Fest Race Director.

Race registration is still open, so be sure to go ahead and sign up as soon as you can at tybeefest.com

Race packet pick-up starts this afternoon at 2.

Remember that parking is metered, and all the course maps are on the event website.

I've been told this year's event is getting an upgrade with a VIP experience for runners, featuring local treats and drinks.

No matter your skill level, it's for a great cause—and Tybee's worth supporting!
