SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Thursday marks a special day for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, celebrating two big milestones: the 25th anniversary of Light the Night and the 75th anniversary of the organization.
The Light the Night fundraiser will take place at the Park at Eastern Wharf in Savannah to support vital research, advocacy and patient support, all for a future where blood cancers are a thing of the past.
Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer in the U.S.
"It is our largest community event to raise awareness for blood cancers. It's a time for the community to come together to support, honor and remember all those affected by those affected by blood cancers," said Katherine Welsch, the campaign development manager for Light the Night in Savannah.

Last year, the event raised over $387,000, and the goal this year is to break records by reaching $450,000. Organizers said as of Wednesday night, over $400,000 had already been raised.
"I'm actually a blood cancer survivor myself. So that is why I do what I do," said Welsch. "Every year when I go into the survivor circle and light a lantern, it's an inspiring moment. I also love that each year, I see more and more people show up."

The event is open to the public, so anyone is welcome to come out to support. Festivities run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The opening ceremony begins at 7 p.m. with the lighting of lanterns, followed by the mile walk at 7:15 p.m. Participants will enjoy a laser show finale afterward. There will also be vendors, sponsors, a bounce house and a visit from members of the Ghost Pirates.
"Whether you’ve lost someone, or you are a patient, when you come out to this event, you just see the actual support you have in the community. Every lantern, when every lantern is lit, that is just one more person that is affected. It is a huge reminder that no one is alone in their fight. It is an inspiring evening," explained Welsch.

It should be noted when arriving at the event, don't forget to pick up your lantern at the lantern tent. Those who raise $100 or more will receive a free t-shirt.
If you are unable to join in person, there is a virtual experience for those online happening on Tuesday, Nov. 19. If you want to join the Light the Night virtual experience, click here to sign up.
