Local nonprofit founder pleads guilty to wire fraud

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The founder of the non-profit Fight the War Within pleaded guilty to a federal charge on Wednesday in Chatham County.

Miranda Briggs faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for wire fraud, but prosecutors recommended probation after the plea agreement was reached.

A second count of theft of government money/property was dismissed.

Briggs will be sentenced at a later date.

According to court records, in 2018, Briggs claimed she was still married to a U.S. Army veteran who had taken his own life and received more than $130,000 from the VA in benefits.

Briggs had reportedly divorced her husband in 2017 and wasn't supposed to receive any money.

“Programs that financially benefit surviving family members of deceased veterans are designed to provide a safety net to those survivors,” stated U.S. Attorney Jill Steinberg. “This guilty plea demonstrates the tenacity of investigators and prosecutors in dismantling this scheme.”
