Record participation expected at 33rd annual Enmarket Savannah Bridge Run

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Excitement is building for the 33rd annual Enmarket Savannah Bridge Run this weekend. A record number of runners are expected to cross the Talmadge Bridge early Saturday morning for the beloved Savannah tradition.

It's one of the toughest races in the South and features one of the steepest bridges in the country. The race benefits St. Joseph/Candler's Cancer Charity and includes a fun costume contest with cash prizes.

From Wonder Woman to Forrest Gump, you’re sure to see some fun costumes out there.

"Using the Talmage Bridge really gives it that unique characteristic from other 5Ks and 10Ks and 15Ks. It's that grade, that difficulty, and that ability to see Savannah from a unique perspective on foot rather than when you're driving by in your car. That really makes this event shine," said Malain McCormick, the race director for the Enmarket Savannah Bridge Run.

Medals provided to participants

If you're one of the thousands running, you can pick up your bib at the Kehoe Iron Works Building on Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Now, we can't forget road closures. If you're planning to drive through Savannah on Saturday, be aware that closures will start as early as 4 a.m. and continue through 1 p.m. Alternative routes will be available, and apps can help guide you around the closures.

The race director shared they expect 5,000 runners this year, breaking last year's numbers of 4,400.

"There's been a rise in popularity in running and with this being kind of a milestone year, the 33rd annual," said McCormick. "There's a lot of questions around what's going to happen to the bridge with the construction. So, people are getting their bridge run. For maybe one last time before construction begins."

The run this year features three key races: the 5K at 8 a.m., the 10K at 8:30 a.m., and for those who love a challenge, the Double Pump at 8 a.m. All races finish at the Savannah Civic Center.

The race is almost sold out, with only 150 spots left as of last night. To sign up, you can visit this link.
