Savannah Fire launches 2024 Keep the Wreath Green campaign

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – It's that time of the year when local fire departments ramp up efforts to prevent fires.

Certain fire risks come with the holiday season, and the Savannah Fire Department has kicked off its annual Keep the Wreath Green campaign to prevent them.

Each time a fire breaks out in Savannah over the holidays, the department will replace one of the many green bulbs on the wreath with a red bulb.

It's a visual reminder hanging at Oglethorpe Avenue headquarters to practice fire safety.

Officials say watering your tree to prevent it from drying out, allowing ample space for your space heater and evaluating old string lights are some of the ways you can prevent fires.

Throughout the campaign, running now through Jan. 3, they'll be sharing more holiday safety advice.

City residents are also encouraged to call 912-651-6756 for a free smoke alarm, alarm batteries and home fire safety surveys.

Since Thanksgiving Day, 15 people total have been displaced by house fires in the city, including one that was likely caused by a malfunctioning space heater.
