Savannah’s United Way Turkey Trot sells out for 16th annual event

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Millions of Americans are planning to run or walk in a Turkey Trot across the U.S. this Thanksgiving morning.

Here in Savannah, hundreds of people will be participating in the 16th annual United Way Turkey Trot ahead of those big holiday meals.

The roads may look empty Thursday morning, but organizers are preparing for their largest turnout yet. The racecourse will be stuffed with runners this year as United Way hosts a sold-out race.

For its 16th annual year, the United Way Turkey Trot will begin at Daffin Park this morning. Just like last year, the race is so popular it sold out before on-site registration could open today. Last year 1500 people participated, and this year the race has expanded to 1800 runners.

Many participants are expected to show up in festive costumes, others will race for fun or fitness, but all will be supporting local non-profits. All the money that is raised will benefit the United Way's community fund, which supports over 80 local programs across five counties.

Last year, the race raised more than $33,000 from the race. This year United Way President & CEO Kimberly Waller tells WSAV that the organization hopes to raise more money.

The event today features a 4-mile run/walk through the Ardsley Park neighborhood, along with a kid's race and a diaper dash for the little ones. Awards will be presented for top finishers, best costumes and more following the race.

More details about the races:

  • 8:00 a.m. – Kids K (0.62 mile, ages 10 & under)
  • 8:15 a.m. – Diaper Dash (35 yards/ 0.02 mile, ages 3 & under)
  • 8:30 a.m. – 4-mile Run/Walk (for all ages)

Whether you are participating or cheering from the sidelines – it's all for a great cause. Many runners are sprinting for the finish line or strolling to work up an appetite.
