SCAD Savannah Film Festival: Red Carpet recap

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - The stars are out in the Hostess City from Kieran Culkin to Daisy Ridley.

On Monday, Oct. 28, WSAV Digital Reporter Dylan James trekked to Broughton Street in Downtown Savannah to meet the luminaries in front of and behind the camera at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.

On the red carpet was actress Daisy Ridley, best known for her role as Rey in the Star Wars franchise. She was in town to receive the Lumiere Award for her performance in the new film Young Woman & The Sea, where she plays Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Ridley spoke about her preparation for the role.

Next up was animator Adam Elliot, known for his dark, subversive stop-motion movies. He encouraged audiences to see his newest project, Memoir of a Snail.

Kieran Culkin is best known for his role as the snarky Roman Roy in HBO's Succession, and in true form, he brushed off the boilerplate questions about acting. His new film is titled A Real Pain, and SCAD bestowed him with the Virtuoso Award.

Chris Sanders, the recipient of the Icon of Animation Award, won over audiences with his decades-long career that includes titles like Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon and his latest, The Wild Robot.

For those who seek to write entertainment, filmmaker Richard Linklater is a hero. SCAD certainly recognized this by giving him the Lifetime Achievement in Screenwriting Award, representing a body of work that includes the Before Trilogy, Dazed & Confused and Boyhood. His newest film is Hit Man, starring Glen Powell.

Finally, newcomer Gints Zilbalodis, a big mind from the little country of Latvia. His animated film Flow, a silent film about a cat who must survive after a flood, was selected by his home country for their submission to the 2025 Academy Awards.

Catch more Film Fest coverage on The Bridge with Patty Turner at 11:30 a.m. on WSAV.
