Trick-or-treating for children with allergies

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – For many, Halloween is a time of excitement, but for parents of children with food allergies, it can bring added stress.

During this time of year, orange, white and even green pumpkins decorate homes—but a teal pumpkin stands out. The Teal Pumpkin Project signals to parents and children with food allergies that a house offers safe, non-food treats.

“I feel like every kid should have that feeling of excitement,” said Melissa Cosmos, a mother participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project.

Placing a teal pumpkin on your doorstep or having your child carry one is a way to indicate that you offer allergy-friendly options. Instead of candy, non-food treats like stickers, bubbles and small toys allow all kids to participate in the Halloween fun.

“Besides candy, we can put out things like stickers, bubbles, fun crazy straws, tiny toys, books, slap bracelets—things that kids of all ages can enjoy,” said Meghann Buchanan, another mom who supports the project.

For parents like Cosmos, the Teal Pumpkin Project is a simple way to make trick-or-treating less stressful and more inclusive.

“Even just trick-or-treating with a toddler is stressful,” Cosmos shared. “Having something she could have while going around trick-or-treating is nice. It’s a great way to make sure all kids have the same experience, even if they can’t eat the candy.”

Some houses may have teal pumpkins but haven’t signed up for the official registry. To find registered locations click or tap here
