Woman allegedly assaults deputy after shoplifting in Hardeeville Walmart

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (WSAV) — A woman was arrested after she allegedly assaulted a deputy at the Hardeeville Walmart on Saturday.

Jasper County deputies responded to a report of shoplifting in the Walmart on Nickel Plate Road, a Jasper County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) spokesperson said.

They made contact with Yira Fonseca, 27. Authorities said she then attempted to flee on foot and assulted a deputy.

Fonseca is charged with shoplifting and assaulting an officer engaged in serving process.

Sheriff Chris Malphrus said that they will not tolerate attacks on deputies, and they will be perusing "the maximum penalties allowed by law."
