WSAV honors STEM Academy teacher with $500 grant

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - With Christmas right around the corner, we are very thankful for our teachers this holiday season as they continue to go above and beyond every day.

This week, we're recognizing a special teacher from the STEM Academy at Bartlett in Savannah as our next "A Banana for the Teacher."

"I'm overwhelmed! I've been teaching for over thirty years and I'm flabbergasted," said Ellen Burrell when she was surprised by WSAV's Ben Katko in her classroom.

Ms. Burrell teaches at the STEM Academy at Bartlett.

"I think at the core of it is that I get so much joy when I take a student where they are and every time I see them grow it does something to me inside," Bartlett said.

Thanks to WSAV, Farah & Farah and the Savannah Bananas, Ms. Burrell has an early Christmas gift for the students in her classroom.

"I teach English language arts.  I believe that probably the best thing I can do is to buy books that the kids will really enjoy," Burrell told WSAV.

She now has a $500 classroom grant to make it happen.

"I have a big tender place in my heart for each of these kids," said Burrell.  "I'd just like them to know that I really do care and I really do want them to be successful."
